Section 8 Housing, officially known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, is a federal assistance program that helps low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. However, families may choose to rent a unit that costs more than the payment standard, in which case they would pay the additional amount plus their standard 30% contribution.
You can use your voucher to rent any housing that meets the program requirements, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. The unit must meet minimum health and safety standards as determined by the PHA. Additionally, if a family moves to a new jurisdiction, they may be able to transfer their voucher through a process called "portability."
Public Housing is government-owned housing units managed by PHAs, where eligible families pay approximately 30% of their income as rent.
